A Conversation on Inclusion

On June 21 & 28 Rev. Bushey will have a conversation with Rev. Barbara Lohrback from St. John’s UCC about LGBTQ Inclusion Listen in as these pastors and friends for nearly a decade dialogue about what it means to have an Inclusive Table and to be Open & Affirming or Welcoming as a congregation for LGBTQ persons.

A Conversation on Racism

In light of recent events and unrest in our communities we plan to use our next couple weeks to have a “conversation” about our Disciples’ priority of Becoming a Pro-reconciling/Anti-racist church in light of the protests and violence we have witnessed.  Join our Sr. Minister Rev Robert Bushey and the Rev Vincent Clark, CEO of KCCSI and former pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church for a two part candid conversation about racism and reconciliation. Rev Bushey & Rev Clark are both natives of Kankakee and have known and worked together in our community for social justice for the last decade.

As a congregation we have claimed to be a welcoming community of Disciples of Christ. What does that mean when our black and brown neighbors cry out in our streets, in many cases joined by all other races, for justice?

We do hope you will tune in to these opportunities to grow in our understanding and our faith as we seek to build bridges of inclusivity in the name of Jesus.

Coronavirus Update

March 18, 2020

Covid-19 Update on Worship Schedule:
All In Person Worship and Small Group Meetings are Cancelled until further notice.

-We will produce an Online Only worship each Sunday, here on this page, on our YouTube channel @cccbourbonnias, and our Website. The service will begin with announcements at 10:30am. Our ministers will be online during the service to interact with any who attend the “watch party.” The video will be available on YouTube as soon as we finish production.

-Online giving is available using our free Church Center App found on the Apple and Google stores. Giving may also be done through our website or via US Mail.

– All Elder’s visits to our LAMS have been postponed due to restrictions on visitors at all local senior living facilities and as a precaution for our Elders and our LAMS. The current visitation limitations and worship cancellations has changed our plans for celebrating Ida Mae Cuprys 100th birthday. Watch for an opportunity to send a greeting to our centenarian. We will be making regular telephone contacts with our LAMS.

– The Church Office will be CLOSED to the public until further notice. Rev Youngblood and myself will continue to be available via phone and online. We will respond to emergency needs on a case by case basis. We want to stay connected as a congregation and will keep you informed as any new ways to connect become available. Please, check on one another via phone, texting, messaging, and refrain from in person visits as we all do our part to decrease transmission of the virus.
We are working on contingency plans for BIB and ways we may be helpful to students and families through the E-Learning schedule.

We value our time together as the body of Christ and we value our health and the health of our community. We in no way want to contribute to the spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19. Be well.

Peace & Joy, Pastor Robert

March 14, 2020

Covid-19 Update on Worship Schedule
We will hold our regular worship at 10:30 am tomorrow (March 15). No Sunday School Classes will meet. Lenten Study and Supper is Cancelled. A limited crew will help assemble bags for BIB students in the afternoon that will be delivered to schools on Monday morning.
– We have again sanitized all surfaces, door knobs and pulls, toilet handles, tables, chairs and floors following the Ladies event earlier today.
– We have changed our communion preparation and method for distribution to self-serve with no trays being passed for communion or offering. Online giving using our free Church Center App is a good option. As always you a free to choose whether or not you participate.
– We ask that those who attend leave at least one chair between worshipers from different families and to refrain from handshakes and hugs. Smiles are welcome! A door greeter has been assigned and will open outside doors for you.
– We ask that you not attend if you have a fever, dry cough or body aches or feel ill in any way, or have in the past several days.
– We recommend folks with underlying health issues be extra cautious and consider your safety a priority when making a decision about attending worship. Be well and worship in person with us another day.
– We will post a video from the service, including the Call to Worship, Pastoral Prayer, Scripture, Message for Today & Benediction on our YouTube channel @cccbourbonnias by early afternoon.
– All Elder’s visits to our LAMS have been postponed due to restrictions on visitors at all local senior living facilities and as a precaution for our Elders and our LAMS. The current visitation limitation will likely change our plans for celebrating Ida Mae Cuprys 100th birthday. We will be making regular telephone contacts with our LAMS.
– The Church Office will remain open and we will be open on Tuesday for Primary Elections unless the State or County Clerk cancels or postpones the election.
We are working on contingency plans for BIB and ways we may be helpful to students and families through the E-Learning schedule.
– We are anticipating canceling in person worship on March 22nd and possibly the 29th as well, stay tuned for updates.

We value our time together as the body of Christ and we value our health and the health of our community. We in no way want to contribute to the spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19. While there have been recommendations for closure, especially for gatherings of 250 (five times our avg attendance) or more, and several area congregations are canceling, we have had no requests from members to cancel. We value your safety and your ability to make reasonable decisions about your attendance in worship, shopping, eating out, etc.

So, if you feel well and comfortable we will look forward to worshiping with you Sunday, March 15 at 10:30 am. If not, check back here after lunch for a link to the service and we’ll see you again soon. Tomorrow’s bulletin is linked below this post. Hope to worship with you in person or online tomorrow. Peace & Joy, Pastor Robert

March 13, 2020
Coronavirus COVID-19 Update: As you are aware, the spread of this novel virus continues to impact our nation with more verified cases daily. World and national health officials have declared a pandemic and major steps are being taken at local, state and federal levels to reduce transmission of this outbreak. We will continue to monitor the latest news and suggestions regarding best practices from health organizations and our General Church ministries during this pandemic.
At this time, we have no plans to cancel worship services, meetings or scheduled events. We urge caution and common sense practices especially for any who may be more vulnerable because of underlying health issues. Your safety is your number one priority.
As a precaution we are changing our communion and offering practices to a self-serve style, eliminating the passing of plates, etc. Offering may also be given on-line through our website or the Church Center App. We plan to practice this through the remaining weeks of Lent and will re-evaluate for Easter and the weeks following. Instructions will be given by the Minister each week. We are doing our best to sanitize surfaces to prevent transmission and we ask that you help by covering any coughs or sneezes with your arm/elbow, wash your hands regularly and stay home if you feel ill, have a fever, etc. As we receive more information, we will do our best to keep you informed of any future schedule changes.
We are not a people of fear, we are a people of hope, peace and love in Jesus Christ. We are not anti-science, we value our capacity to learn about and heal our bodies. We are not driven by false narratives of prejudice against any people. We are a people of compassion and justice for all people in Jesus Christ. Our prayers are with all of our health care officials and workers as they fight to keep us healthy and safe, with all families who worry for loved ones who may have COVID 19 or are more vulnerable, with all who have limited or no access to health care for whatever reason, with all who feel anxiety in this uncertain time. God’s grace and peace be with us as we live through this moment together.

Why Easter?

3/15/20 Update: this event has been canceled.

Beginning March 15th we’ll have a Supper & Study series each week at 5:00 pm to talk about the importance of Easter and people’s encounters with Jesus leading up to it.

Re-New: a lenten journey

Lent is a time for reflection, remembrance, repentance, and a lot of other “re” words, leading to a renewal and resurrection at Easter. Take this Lenten journey on Sundays at 10:30 am and find renewal in your own life.

Ash Wednesday Services

Wednesday February 26 is Ash Wednesday. We will have two services available to you that day. The first is at 12 pm and the second is at 5 pm.

The noon service will begin with time for silent prayer and meditation with an approximately 30 minute service, including the imposition of ashes, at 12:15. The sanctuary will then be open until 1 pm for prayer and meditation.

The evening service will consist of the imposition of ashes as well as silent prayer and meditation.
